Thread Types

6 Types of Engineering Threads

1. Metric (ISO)
60° profile — specified as M10 × 1.5
2. Unified (UNC / UNF)
60° profile — specified as 1/2-20 UNF
3. Whitworth (BSW / BSF)
55° rounded profile — older British machinery
4. Pipe (NPT / BSP)
Tapered sealing threads for fluid systems
5. Square
Power transmission — lead screws, jacks
6. Acme
29° trapezoidal — stronger, easier to manufacture

Know Your Thread Dimensions

DMajor diameter
D₂Pitch diameter

LLead
▲Crest — top of the thread
▼Root — bottom of the thread
◢Flank — side of the profile
Every dimension plays a role in fit and performance.

Working Principle

How Does a Lathe Cut Threads?

1Mount the workpiece
2Select the correct threading tool
3Set the required spindle speed
4Engage the lead screw
5Synchronize feed with rotation
6Take multiple cutting passes
Lead = Pitch × n
Single-start: lead = pitch (n = 1)

60° Profile

Understand the 60° Profile

Metric and Unified threads use a symmetrical 60° basic thread profile.
H = 0.8660 × P
Basic triangle height
h = 0.5413 × P
Actual thread depth
H is the theoretical triangle before truncation.
h is the actual radial depth after the crest and root are truncated.

Formulas

Master These Thread Formulas

P = 25.4 / TPI
Pitch from threads per inch
h = 0.5413 × P
Thread depth
D₂ = D − 0.6495 × P
Pitch diameter
D₁ = D − 1.0825 × P
Minor diameter
H = 0.8660 × P
Basic triangle height
L = P × n
Thread lead (n = number of starts)

Practical Setup

Set Up Your Lathe for Threading

✓ Correct threading tool for the profile
✓ Tool set at centre height
✓ Correct change gears selected
✓ Lead screw engaged
✓ Suitable threading speed
✓ Threading dial used where applicable
✓ Cutting fluid applied
Example: M16 × 2, lead screw = 6 mm
Ratio = 6 / 2
Gear ratio = 3:1
Verify gear arrangement against your lathe's chart.
