What Is Differential Indexing?

Differential indexing is a dividing-head method in which the index plate rotates while the crank is being indexed.
The plate movement is produced through a change-gear train connected to the dividing-head spindle.

Why Use It

Why Use Differential Indexing?

Simple indexing cannot conveniently produce every possible division using the available index circles.
Simple Indexing
Crank → Fixed plate
Limited to available hole circles
Differential
Crank → Moving plate
Plate compensates via gear train
USE APPROXIMATE N₀ • LET THE PLATE COMPENSATE

How Does It Work?

1Dividing-head spindle
2Index crank
3Index plate
4Change gears
5Workpiece
6Worm & worm wheel
The gear train connects the spindle movement to the index plate, so the plate rotates as indexing proceeds.
40 crank turns = 1 spindle rev
Typical 40:1 worm gear ratio

Concept

The Key Idea

The required number of divisions is approximated by a convenient number that can be indexed with the available plate.
The difference between the required and approximate number is compensated by rotating the index plate through the gear train.
1 Required divisions N
2 Choose approximate N₀ (simple-indexable)
3 Calculate gear-train correction
4 Set change gears → cut

Core Formula

Differential Indexing Calculation

G = (R × (N₀ − N)) / (N × N₀)
Differential gear ratio
R Worm gear ratio (typically 40)
N Required number of divisions
N₀ Achievable simple-indexing division
G Required gear-train ratio
Negative G indicates opposite-direction plate rotation (idler gear needed).

Direction

Which Way Does the Plate Turn?

The direction of index-plate rotation depends on whether N₀ is above or below N.
↻
Positive G
Same direction as crank
↺
Negative G
Opposite direction (idler)
Sign convention follows the source formula: G = (R × (N₀ − N)) / (N × N₀).
Always verify direction by rotating the mechanism by hand before cutting.

Worked Example

Cut a 127-Tooth Gear

Required divisions N 127
Approximate N₀ 120
Worm ratio R 40
G = (40 × (120 − 127)) / (127 × 120)
Simplified G
−7 / 381
Decimal
≈ −0.01837
NEGATIVE G → IDLER GEAR NEEDED
Index as for N₀ = 120: 1/3 turn per division (6 holes on 18-hole circle).

Ratio G = driver teeth / driven teeth. Compound pairs multiply. Idlers change direction without changing ratio.

Setup Checks

Before You Cut

✓ Confirm required divisions N
✓ Confirm dividing-head ratio R
✓ Select correct index circle for N₀
✓ Verify change-gear combination
✓ Check gear mounting and backlash
✓ Verify direction of plate rotation
✓ Lock the dividing head as required
✓ Rotate mechanism by hand first
✓ Trial cut on scrap before final part

Workshop Alert

Avoid These Mistakes

✗ Wrong dividing-head ratio
✗ Unsuitable approximate number N₀
✗ Wrong index circle for N₀
✗ Driver and driven gears reversed
✗ Incorrect gear ratio
✗ Incorrect plate rotation direction
✗ Wrong crank movement
✗ No trial check before cutting
DOUBLE-CHECK BEFORE CUTTING
