Definition

What Does Indexing Mean?

Indexing rotates a workpiece through precise angular increments so equally spaced features can be machined accurately.
Equal divisions Precise rotation Repeatable machining
⚙️ Gear teeth
🔩 Splines
🔵 Bolt-hole circles
⬡ Polygons

Equipment

The Dividing Head

🔩Spindle — holds the workpiece
⚙️Worm & worm wheel — gear reduction
🔄Crank — rotates the worm
⭕Index plate — hole circles for fractions
📌Index pin — locks rotation
📐Sector arms — count holes easily
🛑Brake — locks spindle for cutting
40 crank turns = 1 spindle revolution
Typical 40:1 worm gear ratio
1 crank turn = 1/40 revolution. Other ratios exist — always check.

Core Formula

The Formula Every Machinist Needs

T = R / N
Crank turns per division
T = 40 / N
For 40:1 head
θ = 360° / N
Angle per division
R = worm ratio (typically 40)  •  N = number of divisions
Whole turns + fraction × hole circle = physical indexing movement.

Worked Example 1

20 Teeth? Easy.

Worm ratio R 40
Divisions N 20
40 / 20 = 2
Crank turns per tooth
2 FULL CRANK TURNS / TOOTH
✓ No fractional hole circle needed.
Whole number result — the simplest indexing case.

Worked Example 2

24 Teeth Changes Everything

Step 1 — Calculate
40 / 24 = 5/3 = 1 + 2/3
Step 2 — Choose circle
18-hole circle
Step 3 — Fraction to holes
(2/3) × 18 = 12 holes
1 TURN + 12 HOLES ON 18‑HOLE CIRCLE
The fraction becomes a physical movement on the index plate.

Worked Example 3

33 Teeth? Can You Do It?

Worm ratio R 40
Divisions N 33
40 / 33 = 1 + 7/33
Crank turns per tooth
Circle
33 holes
Advance
7 holes
1 TURN + 7 HOLES ON 33‑HOLE CIRCLE
33-hole circle is standard on many index plates.

The Hard Case

Why Does 127 Break Simple Indexing?

40 / 127 ≈ 0.315
Crank turns per division
The required fraction involves denominator 127 — a prime number. Standard index plates do not provide a 127-hole circle.
Simple Indexing ❌
Compound or Differential ⚙️
Differential indexing uses a gear train to rotate the index plate itself — making 127 divisions possible.
Common for cutting metric gears on imperial lead-screw lathes.

Methods

Which Indexing Method?

Direct Indexing
Fast, limited divisions — notched plate, no worm
Simple Indexing
Most common method — worm + index plate
Compound Indexing
Uses two hole circles in sequence
Differential Indexing
Uses a gear train to rotate the index plate
Angular Indexing
Indexes by a specific angle, not divisions
Simple indexing handles most common jobs.

Applications

What Else Can You Index?

⚙️ Gear teeth

🔧 Splines
⬡ Hexagons
⬛ Polygon shapes
🛠 Repair parts
One technique. Many precision jobs.
From gear cutting to drilling bolt circles — indexing does it all.

Workshop Alert

5 Mistakes Can Ruin the Part

❌ Wrong worm ratio assumed
❌ Wrong hole circle selected
❌ Miscounted holes on the plate
❌ Index pin not fully engaged
❌ Spindle / brake not locked
CHECK THE CALCULATION TWICE
A single miscount can scrap the entire workpiece.
