Definition

What Is Cutting Speed?

Cutting speed is the speed at which the workpiece surface passes the cutting tool.
→Metres per minute (m/min)
→Surface feet per minute (SFM)
Depends on material, tool, and machining conditions.
🔄 Surface speed ≠ Spindle speed (RPM)

Key Concept

Cutting Speed Is Not RPM

Cutting Speed (Vc)
Surface speed of material
m/min
Spindle Speed (N)
Spindle revolutions per min
RPM
Key Relationship
Larger diameter → lower RPM
Smaller diameter → higher RPM
(for the same cutting speed)
Engineer Data Hub
Core Formula

Master the Lathe RPM Formula

N = (Vc × 1000) / (π × D)
Spindle speed (RPM)
N Spindle speed (RPM)
Vc Cutting speed (m/min)
D Workpiece diameter (mm)
The 1000 multiplier converts mm to metres.

Tool Selection

HSS or Carbide Tooling?

HSS
✓ General workshop use
✓ Lower cutting speeds
✓ Conventional turning jobs
CARBIDE
✓ Higher cutting speeds
✓ Production machining
✓ Needs rigid setup
Tool grade, coating, feed, depth of cut and machine rigidity all affect recommended speed.

Worked Example

Real Workshop RPM Calculation

Material Mild steel
Tool Carbide
Vc 120 m/min
D 50 mm
N = (120 × 1000) / (3.1416 × 50)
N = 120,000 / 157.08
N ≈ 764 RPM
SET MACHINE TO ≈ 760 RPM
Use nearest suitable machine speed. Slightly below is safer than above.

Imperial Units

Working in Inches & SFM?

N = (SFM × 12) / (π × D)
Spindle speed (RPM)
N Spindle speed (RPM)
SFM Surface feet per minute
D Diameter (inches)
Keep units consistent — all imperial or all metric.

Impact

Correct Speed = Better Machining

✓ Longer tool life
✓ Better surface finish
✓ Higher productivity
✓ Better heat control
✓ Lower costs
✓ Better machine health
⚠️ Too high speed → rapid tool wear. Too low speed → reduced productivity and possible built-up edge.

Workshop

Work Smart. Turn Safely.

✓ Check workpiece diameter
✓ Select suitable cutting speed
✓ Verify the tool grade
✓ Choose nearest suitable RPM
✓ Secure the workpiece
✓ Use proper guarding
✓ Wear eye protection
✓ No loose clothing near rotating parts
When workpiece diameter decreases during turning, increase RPM to maintain constant cutting speed — within machine limits.
